The risk is very low, but not non-existent. Astronomers announced on Monday that they had detected an asteroid about 1.5 km tall in the vicinity of Earthwhich could – with great bad luck – crash into it in the distant future, causing planetary devastation.

Most asteroids of this size have already been discovered, scientists say, but this one has so far been hiding in the glare of the Sun and was therefore particularly difficult to detect. Named 2022 AP7, it “crosses the trajectory of the Earth, which makes it a potentially dangerous asteroid”, explained to AFP Scott Sheppard, astronomer at the Carnegie Institution for science. However, it does not currently threaten to hit us, because it remains “very far” from our planet when it crosses its orbit, he immediately reassured.

Difficult long-term predictions

The threat comes from the fact that, like any asteroid, its trajectory will be slowly modified due to the gravitational forces exerted on it, in particular by the planets. Forecasts are therefore difficult over the very long term. It is the ?largest potentially dangerous object for the Earth discovered in the last eight years?, according to a press release from the American NOIRLab, which operates several observatories.

This NEO (near-Earth asteroid) takes five years to go around the Sun and is now several million kilometers from the nearest Earth. The risk is therefore very hypothetical, but in the event of a collision, an asteroid of this size would have “a devastating impact on life as we know it”, explained Scott Sheppard. The dust thrown into the atmosphere would block the light of the Sun, cooling the planet and causing a mass extinction.

The discovery was made thanks to the Victor M. Blanco Telescope, in Chile, and its DECam instrument, initially developed to study dark matter. The results were published in the scientific journal The Astronomical Journal. Two other asteroids in this complicated area to observe have been discovered, including the closest known asteroid to the Sun. They pose no risk to the Earth.

Asteroids not yet detected

Some 30,000 asteroids of all sizes – including more than 850 of 1 km and larger – have been cataloged in the vicinity of Earth. None of them threaten our planet for the next 100 years. Except that they are not all counted.

VIDEO. DART mission: the incredible images of the crash of a spaceship on an asteroid

According to Scott Sheppard, there would remain ?between 20 and 50? large NEOs to detect. “Most are in orbits that make them hard to find, like orbits keeping them inside (that of) the Earth, and making them hard to see because of the glare of the Sun,” he said. -he explains.

To prepare for a bad discovery, NASA carried out a test mission at the end of September: a ship was propelled against a non-hazardous asteroidproving that it was possible to modify its trajectory.

Olympique Lyonnais finally has a string of victories, and the credit goes to Laurent Blanc in the eyes of Sidney Govou. Even if the game is not – yet – at the rendezvous, the legend of OL does not care.

Known for his taste for polished play and the priority given to possession of the ball, Laurent Blanc is in the midst of an adaptation period. For the one who cut more than six years with French football, the return has been successful for the moment with two victories and a defeat within Olympique Lyonnais. For that, he had to put water in his wine. The change of tactics at the break against Lille was life-saving, and allowed theOL to win 1-0 in a match where the Mastiffs can have big regrets. Nevertheless, given the situation at the end of the Peter Bosz era, the three points are taken without nitpicking on the Rhone side. They make us forget a lot of problems and if some observers remain skeptical about the game played, this is not the case for Sidney Govou. For the former OL player, the priority was winning and it will be time to talk about the game when Laurent Blanc has made his mark. Especially after the recovery after the World Cup.

Only victory is beautiful for Govou

For the moment, it is the moral aspect that reassures and even convinces the former winger of the 2000s, as he confides in the columns of Progress. “ I am a winner and only victory is beautiful. The club is in a complicated situation and there is nothing better than winning to think about something else. Lyons is Lyons. And Lyon must win, no matter how. OL must win matches without looking good and we have to accept this reality. It’s the kind of match he would have lost two weeks ago. There you earn it without the manner. It is to be hoped that it will be there after the World Cup. I have the impression that they are taking a step. The team didn’t have many chances, they were put in danger, but there’s something that changes everything, it’s this desire. This can be seen in the eyes of the players, in the races, the gestures of each other. I’m not a fan when a player raises his arms to the sky, but it shows this desire to win. The players no longer seem resigned. The team is not better but it has this desire which makes the difference. When you want to win, you are more likely to win. It’s stupid but that’s how it is ?Summarizes Sidney Govou, for whom the main change of the Laurent Blanc era was ultimately not the physical condition or the game deployed, but the mental approach to the match. The famous “psychological shock” linked to the change of coach will therefore have taken place at Olympique Lyonnais.

Tottenham : Lloris – D. Sanchez, Dier, Lenglet – Doherty, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Perisic – Lucas, Kane, Son.

A black year. For Paul Pogba, 2022 will not remain a wonderful memory. The international tricolor has lived through difficult times. In addition to the death of his agent and friend Mino Raiola, he chained injuries to Manchester United, a club he left this summer free of any contract. His second visit there was not a great success. Courted by PSG, Pioche eventually returned to Juventus. A comeback for Pogboom, determined to shine a few months before the World Cup. But again, not everything went as planned.

On July 25, he was injured while training with his club in Los Angeles. The Frenchman had to shorten his session following a problem with his right knee. He then moved on to billiards as Juve had indicated on September 5. ?Paul Pogba underwent an arthroscopic external meniscectomy this evening. The operation, performed by Professor Roberto Rossi in the presence of Juventus Health Director Dr. Luca Stefanini, is perfectly successful. The surgeon who had treated him had later indicated that it would take about eight weeks for him to be reintegrated into the team.

Pogba out until 2023

His coach, Massimiliano Allegri, was less optimistic. In early September, he said: ?Pogba, we will find him in January, we have to be realistic.? Despite everything, the 29-year-old midfielder, who had to manage the famous Pogba affair at the same time, hoped to be able to return quickly, he whose objective was to participate in the 2022 World Cup. His dream was shattered. Yesterday his lawyer and agent, Rafaela Pimenta, revealed that his foal will be out of the World Cup. A terrible blow for Pogba, who had recently resumed training.

?It is very painful to announce that Paul Pogba needs time to come back from his operation. If his wishes were realities, he would play tomorrow, but it takes hard work and discipline. That’s all Paul has in mind in these moments when he is challenged. He will continue to do his best to get back on the pitch for the fans and his club as soon as possible. The year 2022 is therefore over for Pogba, whose return to the best will come at the beginning of January during the match against Cremonese (January 4).

His case creates tensions in Turin

After six months without playing, the Frenchman will undoubtedly be motivated. He will also be a valuable reinforcement for the Old Lady who is having a disastrous start to the season (eliminated in the Champions League, 7th in Serie A). But in Piedmont, the Pogba case worries and annoys. According The Team, the management of the player raises questions. It is even a source of strong tension within the club, where there are questions about the footballer’s recovery protocol. His physical preparation is particularly singled out. The staff may have been too strong there, especially since we know that the player did everything to come back as soon as possible to give himself a chance to go to the World Cup.

For its part, the Italian press returned to this new fiasco. The Gazzetta dello Sport explained the reasons for his relapse: ?For the past few days (between one session and the other), he has however reported discomfort in one thigh, probably due to an overload. The tests would have shown a muscle lesion, for which an additional 15 days of stoppage will be necessary, even if this was not disclosed in the last medical bulletins?. Back in the infirmary for an indefinite period, Paul Pogba is causing a lot of trouble for the Old Lady, who did not expect that by repatriating him this summer.

The Council of State reinstated on Monday the technical control for two-wheelersthe application of which was scheduled for early 2023 before its canceled by the government last summer.
?The decision taken by the government on July 25, to reverse the application of technical control to two-wheelers which it had initially decided in August 2021, is illegal?, estimates the highest administrative court in a press release. The Minister of Transport announced on Tuesday morning consultation at the end of the week to determine the “terms” of this technical control. ?We have to be reasonable and proportionate?explained Clément Beaune.

An illegal cancellation

The Council of State has retained two grounds of illegality to annul the decree of last July: first “the abolition of technical control should have been subject to public consultation, given its direct and significant impact on the environment” according to the institution.

Furthermore, the alternative measures proposed by the government are judged “not effective enough”or because they are “only at the draft stage”, either because theydo not make it possible to significantly improve the safety of motorcyclists on the road.

European bond

European law imposes, since the adoption of the directive of April 3, 2014, the obligation for the Member States to set up, in particular, a periodic technical inspection of motor vehicles with two, three or four wheels with a cylinder capacity greater than 125 cm3 from 1 January 2022.

Member States of the European Union can derogate from this obligation only if they have put in place effective alternative road safety measures.

“A victory” for the Respire association

In a statement posted on Twitter, “Respire”, the national association for the improvement of air quality, welcomed the decision of the Council of State qualifying it as “victoire”.

A tweet relayed by the environmental deputy Julien Bayou on his account with this message: “Incredible that it is necessary to go to court to enforce European law and implement the technical control of ‘two-wheelers’.

The government is tempering, a consultation from the end of the week

“taking note” of this decision, the Ministry of Transport however specified that this decision of the supreme administrative jurisdiction did not lead to “an immediate entry into force of the technical control, taking into account the need to publish the application texts beforehand” of the decree. There will be a consultation at the end of the week to determine the “terms” technical control for two-wheelers, assured the Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune, invited in the 4V on France 2 this Tuesday morning, the day after the decision of the Council of State.

During this consultation, which will last a few weeks, the “regularity”the “cost” and the “standards” technical control, with associations of motorcyclists and road safety. ?A significant margin is left to each State by European regulations?added the Minister, “I want us to have a discussion on all points to find, I hope, consensus and something that is the least penalizing possible”. ?We have to be reasonable and proportionate?concluded Clément Beaune.

Several days after the deadly stampede which killed at least 156 people on Saturday evening in Seoul, the first responsibilities are emerging. National Police Chief Yoon Hee-keun ruled on Tuesday 1er november “insufficient” the reaction of the police on the evening of the tragedy, knowing however “that a large crowd had gathered even before the accident occurred, suggesting an imminent danger”.

?I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely apologize to the public for this accident, as Minister responsible for personal safety?South Korean Interior Minister Lee Sang-min told parliament on Tuesday, before bowing his head to elected officials and the cameras.

About 100,000 people were expected, but, due to the unofficial nature of the event, neither the police nor the local authorities actively managed the crowd. Many young people are among the 156 dead and dozens injured, gathered for the first Halloween party since the pandemic in Seoul’s cosmopolitan Itaewon district.

137 police officers deployed

Police admitted on Monday that they had deployed only 137 officers there, while stressing that this figure was higher than those for Halloween parties in previous years. Meanwhile, 6,500 civil servants were mobilized for another demonstration in the capital, in which only 25,000 people participated, according to local media.

The South Korean security forces are masters in crowd control, in a country where the numerous and frequent demonstrations are often supervised by a number of agents greater than that of the participants. But, in the case of the Halloween festivities in Itaewon, there was no designated organizer. Partygoers gathered in the neighborhood to attend various events in bars, clubs and restaurants.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said on Tuesday that his country must urgently improve its system for managing large crowds following the disaster. “People’s safety is important”hammered the Head of State during a government meeting, “whether or not there is an organizer at an event”.

Lack of anticipation

Mr. Yoon called on the country to acquire “advanced digital skills” to improve its crowd management. Seoul City Hall already has a real-time crowd monitoring system that uses cellphone data to predict the size of an event’s attendance, but it was not used Saturday night in Itaewon, according to local media.

Itaewon district authorities also failed to deploy security patrols, with officials saying the Halloween event was considered a ” a phenomenon “ rather than a ” festival “which would have required an official crowd control plan.

That night, tens of thousands of people rushed into a narrow alley. Eyewitnesses described how, in the absence of police or crowd control, disoriented revelers pushed, shoved and crushed people stuck in the alley.

The day after the tragedy, critics rocketed on social networks against the authorities, accused of lack of anticipation. Many users accused the police of completely failing to control the crowd, leaving too many people to crowd around Itaewon subway station and in the alleys where the deadly stampede occurred.

This asteroid, named 2022 AP7, “crosses Earth’s path, making it a potentially dangerous asteroid,” said Scott Sheppard, astronomer at the Carnegie Institution for science. However, it does not currently threaten to hit us, because it remains “very far” from the Earth when it crosses its orbit, he immediately reassured.

The threat comes from the fact that like any asteroid, its trajectory will be slowly modified due to the gravitational forces exerted on it, in particular by the planets. Forecasts are therefore difficult over the very long term. It is the ?largest potentially dangerous object for the Earth discovered in the last eight years?, according to a press release from the American NOIRLab, which operates several observatories.

?Devastating impact?

This NEO (near-Earth asteroid) takes five years to orbit the Sun, and is now several million kilometers from Earth at its closest.

Important detection

Some 30,000 asteroids of all sizes — including more than 850 of 1 km and larger — have been cataloged around Earth. None of them threaten our planet for the next 100 years. Except that they are not all counted.

According to Scott Sheppard, there would remain ?between 20 and 50? large NEOs to detect. “Most are in orbits that make them hard to find, like orbits keeping them inside (that of) the Earth, and making them hard to see because of the glare of the Sun,” he said. -he explains.

The triumph of ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Sunday, October 30, celebrated around the world as that of democracy over the far right and authoritarianism, is historic in many respects. After two consecutive terms between 2003 and 2011 and five hundred and eighty days in prison, Lula returns to power for a third term, unheard of in Brazil.

It is however a half-hearted victory. The small difference in votes with his rival, Jair Bolsonaro ? who had still not recognized his defeat on Monday evening ?, the victory of Bolsonarist candidates in many states and the composition of the Congress resulting from the legislative elections of October 2 place the former trade unionist steelworker in an awkward position. According to the opinion of many observers, she could severely limit her room for maneuver and make this third term a path strewn with pitfalls.

The president-elect will first have to deal with the fact that 14 of the country’s 27 governors will be in opposition, including the states of Sao Paulo, Rio and Minas Gerais, which are home to more than a third of the population. In Congress, then, the parties allied with Bolsonaro elected 187 deputies (including 99 for the Liberal Party of the outgoing president alone, which becomes the first force in the lower house), or 36% of the 513 seats. Opposite, the PT and its allies will have 108 seats (21%).

For four years, Bolsonarism has been consolidated, well beyond the single figure of Bolsonaro, and has become a real political force that Lula will not be able to ignore. ?Brazil has become much more conservative, points out Mauricio Santoro, researcher attached to the State University of Rio de Janeiro. The triumph of ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Sunday, October 30, celebrated around the world as that of democracy over the far right and authoritarianism, is historic in many respects.

And Lula will have to face a strong, well-organized right-wing opposition, with the capacity to mobilize in the streets. »
