Sam Taylor/Netflix

Mothers must be celebrated, and for that reason, the arrival of a new Mother’s Day is the ideal excuse to review great examples (and anti-examples) of film and television.

Evelyn Abbott (A place in silence)

One of the latest horror film masterpieces featured one of the greatest mothers in cinema. Directed and starring John Krasinski, A place in silence imagine the planet at the mercy of some powerful creatures, which can only be escaped by not emitting sound. In that world of signs and whispers, Lee (Krasinski) and Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt) try to survive alongside their children. In this film and its sequel, the woman fights tirelessly for the well-being of her family and makes all kinds of sacrifices in order to prevent the creatures from attacking her children. Evelyn endures many types of pain and, in a truly terrible scene, even goes to give birth struggling not to make any noise. In a context of terror and hopelessness, she does justice to the well-known saying that “there is only one mother.” A place in silence available from Paramount + and A place in silence 2, on Movistar Video, and Apple TV.

Jean Milburn (Sex Education)

Sex Education takes place in a secondary school, in which young people seek to understand what place sex occupies in their lives, and how they relate to a world about which they do not know as much as they believed. Under this argument, the plot studies the many forms of sexuality, exploring its characters as free creatures, who deserve to obey (and not suffer) the power of desire. And in that tale so hormonal, Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson) is the sex therapist who contains, accompanies and advises many of these adolescents. She is Otis’s mother (Asa Butterfield), the protagonist of the story and although he feels intimidated by the freedom with which his mother lives her desire, that bond will allow him to help many of his companions sexually (although ironically, his experience in the field is nil ). As the chapters go by, Jean bonds not only with Otis, but even with her friends, thus becoming the symbolic mother of a new generation. She is a 21st century television mom, who does not judge, but accompanies according to the need presented by each of these characters. Sex Education is available on Netflix.

Mildred Pierce (The torture of a mother)

Although the title is Mildred Pierce, the history in Argentina had an unbeatable name: The torture of a mother. In both versions of this story (the film by Michael Curtiz with Joan Crawford, and the miniseries of Todd Haynes with Kate Winslet), Mildred is a woman who must cope with the Great Depression as a context and with no other company than that of her daughter, Veda. But through hard work and effort, she rises socially and becomes the owner of a better lifestyle. However, her daughter’s bad habits and selfishness make Mildred’s life a real torment. In this way, her sacrifice to achieve a better life for herself and for Veda ends up being spoiled thanks to the whims of the young woman. These two versions of The torture of a mother They are great melodramas and they give an account of the tragedy of a woman, who finds in her daughter a painful rival. Michael Curtiz’s feature film is on Apple TV and the miniseries on HBO Max.

Anjelica Huston in Wes Anderson’s Cinema

Throughout his career, Wes Anderson summoned Anjelica Huston on four occasions and on three of them, the actress personified very different ways of mothering. On The eccentrics TenenbaumEtheline is a generous mother, patient with her children and capable of accompanying them in their most difficult moments. On Aquatic lifeEleanor Zissou is the protagonist’s partner, but also a kind of mother for a man who does not stop needing guidance, affection and support (apart from money). And finally, in Travel to Darjeeling, Huston plays a mother who chose to pursue her vocation, thus sacrificing a family life. Although these three women are very different from each other, Anderson relies on Huston’s warmth to represent mothers who do not seek perfection but truth, and who make mistakes, but understand love as a great engine. They are very different mothers, who are joined by Huston’s enormous on-screen presence. Eccentrics Tenenbaum, Life Aquatic and Travel to Darjeeling available on Star +.

Emily Gilmore (Gilmore Girls)

It would be easy to talk one more time about Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) as the great mother of this series, but the truth is that Emily (Kelly Bishop) has long deserved that place. First as a secondary character, who soon came to the center deservedly, Emily had a remarkable evolution throughout fiction. And while Lorelai used to shut herself up in her opinions and Rory (Alexis Bledel) pursued her changing decisions, Emily displayed an unexpected ability to adapt.

This is a mother who did not always do things well and who on several occasions showed a selfish and manipulative streak. However, she eventually learned to respect Lorelai’s decisions, and unconditionally accompanied her through her most difficult moments. And in the last four specials that closed the story, he also proved capable of taking that last step towards a happy future, in which widowhood was revealed as a new stage, far from the mansions with many rooms and few affections. Seen in a complete way, she is the Gilmore woman who grew the most and motherhood always understood it as a way to accept (even reluctantly) the changes proposed by the new generations. Gilmore Girls is available on Netflix.

From yapa: Norma Bates

“A man’s best friend is his mother,” an Oedipal Norman Bates assured him (Anthony Perkins) a Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), during a scene from Psychosis. And although including her on this list can be somewhat tricky, no moviegoer can deny that even from the grave, Mrs. Bates is one of the great mothers of cinema. Psychosis it is available on HBO Max, Qubit TV, and Movistar Play.

For more than 20 years, the public that comes to see a movie by M. Night Shyamalan, knows what they are sticking to: a plot that does not withstand too truthful scrutiny, a lot of atmosphere of concern and fear and a “surprise” ending that some viewers see coming and others do not, but definitely has the audience talking about the movie, either to marvel or to curse the director.

In this way, ‘Old‘, his most recent film, falls into the category of’The village‘(personally the only tape of hers that every time I see it I enjoy) or the very famous one’The sixth Sense‘, that is, some of his films that generate the most reactions; but this is not a compliment, necessarily; The thing here is that the script is flimsy and depends a lot on the effects for the audience to get involved, something that in the previous films did not have to happen. Although, at least, it’s not as bad as’The incident‘(that hideous killer plant thing with Marky Mark, remember?) or that filth called’The last Airbender‘, which he didn’t like.

Adapted from ‘Sandcastle‘, a fascinating graphic novel created by Pierre Oscar Lèvy and Frederik Peeters, the film offers an atmosphere of mystery, disorientation and the usual surprise revelation in the last act, that changes public perception. However, lThe director’s ability to structure everything around that same surprise is already well spent And when the time comes for the audience to connect with the characters, there is a real problem: you can’t, because, although the effort is noticeable, there is never a convincing plot or characters that we really care (or interest).

Old (Universal Pictures)

The wonderful Belgian actress Vicky Krieps (the protagonist of ‘Phantom Thread‘ from Paul Thomas Anderson, who was put to you by you with two fabulous beasts like Daniel Day-Lewis and Lesley Manville and emerged victorious from the challenge), plays Prisca Capa, a cultured and sensitive museum curator who takes a family vacation with her husband, the accountant Guy Capa (Gael Garcia Bernal, good, but stiff, as is his custom: the Krieps and any of the rest of the cast eat it easily) to try to soften the imminent blow that will represent the announcement of their separation to their young children Maddox (Alexa Swinton) y Trent (Nolan River).

The five star hotel in a strange tropical paradise they arrive on this last family vacation, that offers them all the comforts, including an excursion to a remote beach where they can spend the day away from other tourists. Together with them they do the Charles walk (Rufus Sewell), his wife Chrystal, who is many years younger than him (Abbey Lee, the killer cannibal model of ‘The Neon Demon’), his daughter Kara (Kylie Begley) and his mother Agnes (Kathleen Chalfant, the formidable grandmother of ‘The Affair’), as well as the psychiatrist Patricia (Nikki Amuka-Bird) and her husband Jarin (Ken Leung).

Without revealing too much of the (little) plot; happens that shortly after the Capa and their companions arrive at the idyllic cove, they begin to notice a strange transformation, first in the children and then in themselves: they are aging, by years, in a matter of minutes (not like the character of David Bowie on ‘The anxiety‘, from 1983, but you have an idea).

Old (Universal Pictures)

Old (Universal Pictures)

Caught with no way out in the style of ‘The exterminating angel‘ from Luis Bunuel (yes, Shyamalan is a great movie buff, although he is not a very original director), the characters quickly become hysterical as they children become teenagers, his thoughts and feelings become more complicated, which creates drama for his parents, who begin to suffer their own degeneration due to premature aging. But after realizing that at least one member of each group in the group suffered from some ailment or illness, the Capa try to make one last effort to escape, or instead find out what led them to this particular beach. where there seems to be a possible escape from what humanity fears most from its origin: death.

In his last act, the movie becomes more of a family melodrama than a horror movie (which will surely annoy the audience expecting something else), and then all of a sudden it becomes Shyamalan’s eternal exercise of seeking to replicate the effect of ‘The Twilight Zone’, only without being able to achieve it at all – as in ‘The lady of the water ‘ O ‘The visitors’, which ended up frustrating their viewers.

In fact, for those who demand an explanation about what is happening, there is, although personally I wish there were not. The graphic novel, by Lévy and Peeters, has a quite different ending than the film and personally, I found it much more satisfying than the one proposed by the director.

While the logic the movie provides makes some sense, you feel like you have at least 30 minutes left and also the two or three justifications that he forces in and that sabotage the proposed atmosphere.

When one of the characters in the film laments, at one point, that it is not fair that so many moments of his life have been lost due to the phenomenon of this beach, Is right. Frankly, after the year and a half of the pandemic we’ve just been through, and given the looming uncertainty of the future, Who can’t identify? Unfortunately, Shyamalan asks this question which is interesting and then abandons it to impose an explanation, as I said, quite condescending.

Having said that, Shyamalan has become so consistent with style, with its successes and failures, which, as the principle said, whether viewers find it enjoyable or simply predictable, ‘Old men ‘underlines an important truthNamely, that at this point, the old is definitely nothing new.

Shia LaBeouf is once again in the eye of the hurricane and his current situation has led the director and producers of ‘Fragments of a woman’ not to consider him suitable for his performance in the Netflix film to be awarded.

There is no doubt that movies are often accompanied by both curses and blessings; Thanks to the climate that prevails in Hollywood, any scandal that comes is dodged with speed on many occasions and those involved are more than obliged to pronounce their position on the situation presented. All this with regard to the reputation of Shia LaBeouf, known for films like Honey Boy and Transformers. The actor recently premiered on Netflix Fragments of a Woman by Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó (Johanna), but a controversy has surrounded it.

The film narrates the loss of a son in a marriage, as well as the decline in the relationship of both, but more than talking about the problems of the couple, the plot focuses on the parts of the grief that the woman in question is putting together after the loss and how her relatives react to this. The drama is among the most viewed content on the platform streaming, thanks to the expectation generated since the last edition of the Venice International Film Festival, where Vanessa Kirby won the award for Best Female Performance.

Today, Kirby and actress Ellen Burstyn are in the race for awards season to win a nomination at the next edition of the Oscars, something that would not be surprising for their talent displayed on screen. We will not lie either, LaBeouf performs in an excellent way and we are without a doubt one of his best performances, although, to his bad luck, Netflix removed him from the campaign for any awards for various reasons, but mainly because of the allegations against him that the singer and the actor’s ex-girlfriend, FKA Twigs, he denounced at the end of last year, declaring physical and psychological abuse of his ex-partner and also infers torture, sexual abuse and an attempted murder.

‘Fragments of a Woman’: How was the sequence shot with Vanessa Kirby made?

Shia LaBeouf and Vanessa Kirby are the protagonists of ‘Fragments of a woman’.

Shia’s defense denies these defamations, however, the interpreter has a previous history of drugs, alcoholism and assault before other victims. Your role in Fragments of a woman has a strong sequence between him and Kirby, in which there is a kind of abuse, something that for the actor is not favorable, so The producers of the film and its director preferred to omit it for consideration of the film in the awards season and requested that the person be separated from the artist.

‘Fragments of a Woman’: Where have we seen Vanessa Kirby before?

The actor has claimed that he has a problem to deal with, so he has not made a major fuss about it either. Kirby, whom we saw on The Crown and Hobbs and Shaw, was interviewed for the Times in London and said: ?I stand with all survivors of abuse and respect the courage of anyone who speaks their truth. Regarding the recent news, I cannot comment on an ongoing legal case. “

Mundruczó for his part said: “I would like to keep the focus on the beautiful inner journey of a female character.” Shia LaBeouf’s career is in flux and exposing him for further scandals with awards season was certainly not an option, so he will keep a low profile.

Following a string of well received singles, emerging pop star Remi Wolf has released her long awaited debut album Juno via Island Records. The 13-track offering is Wolf?s first full length album, which vibrantly welcomes listeners into the kaleidoscopic, chaotically eclectic world that Wolf has created over the past year. Written and recorded throughout the pandemic, the album explores the triumphant highs and candid lows of the rising songwriter?s career thus far ? showcasing Wolf?s clever and endearing lyricism and glittering instrumentation drawn from her wide-ranging array of influences. Prior to the album?s release, Wolf sold out a brief run of shows in LA, NYC, and Chicago and recently announced her 20-date world tour in late 2021/early 2022.

As Juno built momentum this summer, Wolf shared a string of singles giving fans a taste of what to expect from the project. Leading with the standout ?Liquor Store?, Wolf highlighted her ever-present ability to make weighty topics approachable and accessible through her humor and honest lyricism. The track debuted on BBC Radio 1 as Annie Mac?s Hottest Record. Other singles leading to the album received praise from the likes of The New York Times, Pitchfork, Billboard, MTV, UPROXX, HYPEBAE, Consequence, Entertainment Weekly and more. Early fan favorite ?Anthony Keidis? was highlighted in Wolf?s recent interview with The Los Angeles Times. Wolf has also ensured each release is equipped with new visualizers showcasing the detailed, multi-dimensional approach that has garnered Wolf?s overwhelming support in the last year.

Wolf?s ever-present personality, charisma, and unique eye have established her as a trailblazer for Gen Z pop. Widespread support from her avid fanbase (affectionately referred to as ?Remjobs?), and industry peers alike have grown quickly since the release of her well-received EP I?m Allergic to Dogs! in 2020. She has collaborated with Dominic Fike, Beck, and Nile Rodgers, earned social media praise from John Mayer, Khalid, Willow and Camila Cabello, and was a guest on Kenny Beats? ever-popular ?The Cave? web series. Wolf has also gained traction with multiple notable placements in Apple?s iPhone 12 global ad campaign,  Instagram?s global ?More To Heart? commercial, Snapchat?s international commercial for its new Sound feature, and the worldwide commercial for Samsung?s Galaxy Buds earphone. She?s made memorable performances on network TV (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon) and at notable festivals like Outside Lands, ACL and Firefly. With the release of Juno, Wolf will undoubtedly cement herself as an icon in pop music and beyond.

There are many moving pieces in Hulu?s new limited series Dopesick. What makes it a compelling watch is the way the drama focuses on the residents of a small and fictional Appalachian town ravaged by opioid addiction.

Key among them are Dr. Samuel Finnix (Michael Keaton) and his patient Betsy Mallum (Kaitlyn Dever), whom viewers got to know in Wednesday?s premiere. Finnix is a trusted figure in his community, but the well-intentioned widower is also overwhelmed by all of the pain and injuries the myriad of local coal miners need him to treat. By the first installment?s end, the list includes Betsy after her back is severely injured on the job.

Finnix trusted the word of a Purdue Pharma rep, like numerous doctors mistakenly did in the early aughts, when he said that OxyContin was a miracle painkiller that hooked less than 1 percent of its users, and so he prescribed it to Betsy and her coworkers. We don?t see Betsy strung out on opioids in the first episode, but there is a flash-forward of another one of Finnix?s patients who turned to prostitution to finance her addiction.

Betsy, a closeted lesbian, dreamed of earning enough money to move away with her girlfriend and live in her truth far away from her homophobic parents. Since Dopesick is incredibly realistic and heartbreakingly sad, her dreams and her romantic relationship will likely be two of the various casualties her drug dependence will claim. Finnix is also shown in a flash-forward mourning the loss of his opioid-addicted patients while testifying in court, and he notes that so many died that he lost count. Will Betsy be one of them?

Although Betsy, Finnix and DEA agent Bridget Meyer (Rosario Dawson) are composites, Dopesick, like Beth Macy?s nonfiction book of the same name, also includes real-life characters to widen the narrative net. Chief among them are Dr. Richard Sackler (Michael Stuhlbarg), the mastermind behind the drug, federal prosecutors Rick Mountcastle (Peter Sarsgaard) and Randy Ramseyer (John Hoogenakker) and U.S. Attorney John Brownlee (Jake McDorman).

One of the most shocking revelations in Dopesick is that the FDA willfully ignored the potency of OxyContin and that the man who signed off on the deceptive labeling went on to work for the Sackler family. Smoking guns aside, the thing that will keep viewers coming back is the investment in characters like Finnix and Betsy.

What did you think of the first installment of Dopesick? Grade the premiere in our poll, and drop your thoughts in the comments.

V8 supercar driver James Courtney has been given a VERY embarrassing nickname by driving rivals – as they mock his raunchy images with model girlfriend Tegan Woodford

James Courtney regularly posts raunchy photos alongside his model girlfriend Tegan Woodford to Instagram.

‘What’s he thinking? Is he showing off or just being her handbag,’ one driver told the publication.

It comes after James posted more risqué photos of his ladylove to Instagram despite being forced to apologise after his followers took offence to a racy picture.

Last month, he uploaded a photo of Tegan posing in their garden wearing a skimpy white bikini top and orange mini skirt.

‘Doing the bull dance, feeling the flow?. Working it!’ he wrote, referring to a scene from the film Happy Gilmore in which Adam Sandler pretended to ride a golf club like a bull.

The posts came just weeks after James invited criticism by posting a racy Instagram photo of himself and Tegan in their newly renovated kitchen.

At the time, many fans took offence to the photo, which showed Tegan wearing only a sheer black negligée.

John Cena is the star of a new cinematic campaign for Visit Abu Dhabi.

The popular wrestler and actor stars in the new advertisement, in which he takes a very last-minute detour to the UAE capital after reading about the city in a magazine, while sat in a private jet.

?Let?s go to Abu Dhabi instead,? Cena tells the pilot in the video. ?Drop me off!?

?Sir, I have already flown past, I would have to change the flight path,? the stressed captain replies.

Cena takes matters into his own hands and, wearing a parachute and goggles, he opens the jet?s door and jumps out shouting, ?Now?s the time, Mike.?

At the end, we?re promised a part two. In the video, we don?t actually see Cena making the most of Abu Dhabi?s attractions, but he does read about Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Ferrari World, the desert and corniche in the fictional magazine feature.

Cena is not the first international celebrity to star in a UAE tourism campaign. Here we round up more people who have?

1. Jessica Alba and Zac Efron

Alba and Efron have starred in a series of movie-like Dubai Tourism campaign videos set in the city. The Dubai Presents series includes A Brand New You, in which a future version of Efron time travels to the present to try and better himself, and A Romance to Remember, which riffs off a rom-com meet cute.

The videos see the Hollywood stars venture into the desert, touring around the souqs in Deira, skydiving, enjoying abra trips and dining at Jumeirah Al Qasr hotel. The pieces are all directed by Cruella‘s Craig Gillespie.

2. Shah Rukh Khan

Bollywood hero Khan’s Dubai Tourism campaign launched in 2016. The My Name Is Khan star showcased the best of Dubai through the #BeMyGuest six-video series.

In the final video, the star receives a mysterious box. He follows a set of clues around the emirate, to solve a puzzle. He eventually does, and in the last scene walks around a beach before spotting Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow.

He sets the box down in front of her, as she asks ?What?s this?? He responds simply: ?Be my guest”. Then he walks away.

3. Gwyneth Paltrow

Goop founder Paltrow takes on the mantle from Khan in the A Story Takes Flight film and campaign, which also stars Kate Hudson and Zoe Saldana.

The actresses embark on three journeys of exploration through the emirate “filled with inspiration, discovery and human connections”, according to Dubai Tourism.

In the film, directed by Emmy winner Reed Morano, Paltrow explore the souqs, tries her hand at watersports and dances in a nightclub. Hudson, meanwhile, is in Old Dubai, by the Creek at sunset and doing karaoke, while Saldana is in the desert with her children, exploring City Walk, checking out the Dubai Frame and motorbiking towards the Burj Khalifa.

4. Nicole Kidman

In 2015, Australian actress Kidman was introduced as the new face of Etihad Airways.

She starred in a five-minute film for the brand, titled Reimagine, that gave viewers a look at the airline’s Airbus A380 as she tours the aircraft on a flight between New York and Abu Dhabi.

Of the campaign, Kidman said: ?The film is a culmination of Etihad?s vision to tell the airline?s story in an extremely innovative way and a commitment to engaging with the public as has never been attempted by an airline before. It was a great challenge but one which has definitely paid off and it was great to be part of such an exciting project.?

5. Jennifer Aniston

Friends star Aniston starred in an Emirates campaign in 2015. In the advert, Aniston finds a child in her first-class cabin, then walks through the rest of the plane to find the boy’s parents in economy class. In a second campaign, she plays a bewildered US airline passenger, wearing a bathrobe and clutching a loofah and a bag of toiletries, who asks the flight attendants where she can find the shower.

The attendants tell her there is no shower and no bar, and offer hot towels and some nuts. ?This isn?t an Emirates plane, ma?am,? they say.

In the next scene, Aniston wakes up in her private suite in an Emirates first-class cabin, and realises the whole episode was a nightmare. The ad?s slogan is: ?Wake up to flying as it should be.?

In the next scene, Aniston wakes up in her private suite in an Emirates first-class cabin, and realises the whole episode was a nightmare. The ad?s slogan is: ?Wake up to flying as it should be.?

Many may know Hulk, or rather Bruce Banner with just Mark Ruffalo’s face, but there have actually been two other two versions in the last two decades (not counting the first Hulk from 1977): Eric Bana and Edward Norton. Norton recently commented that he could have had a second, much darker movie, but Marvel wouldn’t.

Edward Norton starred in The Incredible Hulk in 2008, which in a way followed the story of Bana’s 2003 movie, but was also a reboot. In fact, The Incredible Hulk officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), being his second film, after Iron Man.

But by the time the Hulk was going to return to the MCU, in The Avengers, Marvel decided to hire another actor, Mark Ruffalo, to replace Norton. Now, the previous Hulk has commented in an interview with The New York Times about his original plans for the character, which included a darker approach, similar to that of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, and how his departure was not as it was once painted by the president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige:

?I loved the Hulk comics. I think they were something mythical. And what Chris Nolan did with Batman … I wanted to do something in line with those movies: [una historia] long, dark and serious.

I proposed a two-movie saga: the first one that told the origin, and then one that was based on the idea of ??the Hulk as someone more conscious, the type who could control his own journey. AND [Marvel] they told me, ‘that’s what we want!’ But at the end of it all, it wasn’t what they wanted.

[Kevin Feige y yo] We had positive discussions about these movies, but then we saw how long it would take to make them and I couldn’t. I would honestly also have wanted more money than they would be willing to pay me, although in reality that [dinero] It’s not what motivated me to make another Hulk movie. “

The comparison with Nolan’s Batman is more than interesting, and without a doubt that a darker story could make sense for a character rejected by the world for being synonymous with chaos and destruction. But in the end, Marvel hired Ruffalo and his character already had that dark and rejecting plot between Avengers: Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok, although not as developed as perhaps Norton believed the character deserves.

Regarding his departure from Marvel, Norton says that he disagrees with the comments Kevin Feige made a few years ago, in which he said that his decision to change the actor was not for financial reasons, but because they wanted an actor who “played the creativity and collaborative teamwork that other cast members have ?. According to Norton, this was baseless criticism, although he understands that it may have been part of a strategy to defend his brand.

?In the end, they didn’t want to make a long, dark and serious movie. But it doesn’t matter anymore ?.

Indeed, it no longer matters. The MCU has grown into something gigantic, with many more characters than the original Avengers and many stories to tell, of all kinds. Maybe one day we’ll see another Hulk solo movie, but in the meantime, we can be sure we’ll see Ruffalo’s version again in more movies and maybe series. [The New York Times vía IGN]
