The digital certificate was presented as a “green passport” to certify that users have been fully vaccinated, have recovered from the disease or have tested negative for COVID-19. In recent weeks, it has become an essential tool for those who travel or want to access some services, such as restaurants and hotels or tourist accommodation, according to the rules applied by the Government in high-risk councils, but some users are having difficulties in obtaining the document.

The system for issuing certificates, which began to be used in Portugal on June 16, entered into force throughout the European Union on July 1, and with the approach of vacations and the reduction of restrictive measures in several countries, there were many citizens who sought to obtain the certificate as “free transit” to return to a situation of greater normality.

Despite the initial challenge to the process, the European Union ended up giving the green light to the system and confirming its application in all countries, although work is still being done on the harmonization of processes. And there are new recommendations for the verification of certificates, which present a two-dimensional code (QR Code) that can be read with the help of an application in order to verify validity.

The Shared Services of the Ministry of Health (SPMS) confirmed to SAPO TEK that, on July 16, 3 million and eight hundred thousand EU COVID digital certificates had been issued, covering the three possible situations, and that these can be obtained through the SNS 24 portal, as well as the SNS 24 app on Android and iOS. There are users who received the document by email without even having asked for it, but SAPO TEK knows that some users have had difficulty completing the process, with indications of errors in the procedure.

In some cases to which we had access, only after several insistence was the certificate unlocked, with access to the user document already with the two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, but there are more serious situations, resulting from incomplete contact details, or households of older users.

One of the situations that was reported to us indicated that there was no valid contact for the generation of an access code to the certificate, in which case the same phone number was used by two users, in which only one of them managed to obtain the certificate.

SAPO TEK questioned the SPMS about this situation, and the indication given to us is that “people who do not have up-to-date contacts should go to their health unit (health center) and promote the updating of their contacts. After updating the contacts, the user is able to obtain the COVID EU digital certificate through the SNS 24” portal.

The resolution requires a face-to-face visit, in situations that often affect older users with less digital literacy.

SPMS also mentions that “since last week it is possible to consult the COVID UE digital certificate in the SNS 24 app, for that, just install the SNS 24 mobile application and authenticate yourself using the Mobile Digital Key”, a solution that is also not very practical for older users.

The SNS24 can be of help to clarify doubts, but updating contacts in Health Centers seems to be the only way for these users to obtain the digital certificate. And in this case, we are still talking about older users, but when vaccination is extended to younger users, the problem may be repeated, as many guardians have their contacts associated with informing younger children, and not only that.

SAPO TEK has compiled a set of questions that it has been updating and that intend to clarify the main doubts about the Digital Certificate, Green Certificate or Green Passport, as the document is also known.

What are the Digital Certificate options?

When you ask for a certificate, you can choose one of three options: the Vaccination certificate, which proves that the citizen in question has already taken at least the vaccine against COVID-19; the Testing certificate, in case you have not yet been vaccinated but tested negative to COVID-19; finally, a Recovery certificate, that is, proving that it was infected, but that it recovered from COVID-19, becoming immune to the virus.

What data is needed?

Once one of the three options is chosen, you will have to indicate the date of birth on the form’s calendar, as well as the user number of the National Health Service, which you can see on the Citizen’s Card, for example. Afterwards, you must confirm the data processing by the health service authorities, so that the access code to the European Union COVID Digital Certificate can be sent to you.

Do I need to pay for the Digital Certificate?

The document is free and works as a kind of boarding pass on trips, or “free transit” for access to restaurants, hotels and other accommodation. It can be presented in a paper or digital format and is bilingual, in the citizen’s national language and in English.

How is the Digital Certificate valid?

The document has a QR code to be easily read by electronic equipment. Reading can be done with an application or a code reader, similar to those used in supermarkets.

When is the Digital Certificate valid?

Although it can be issued right after taking the vaccines, the Certificate is only valid 14 days after vaccination, after which the vaccine itself is considered valid.

How does it work or Green Certificate?

The document indicates the date of vaccination (or the different doses), tests performed or recovery from the COVID-19 disease, in order to cover all options for citizens. Note that the document is only valid for vaccines that have been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). So far only four vaccines are valid: BioNTech Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen. The certificate thus opens doors, for example, to US citizens who have already been vaccinated by the respective companies.

How much does the certificate cost?

The COVID European Digital Certificate is free, safe and accessible to everyone. In recent weeks, it has become an essential tool for those who travel or want to access some services, such as restaurants and hotels or tourist accommodation, according to the rules applied by the Government in high-risk councils, but some users are having difficulties in obtaining the document.

The system for issuing certificates, which began to be used in Portugal on June 16, entered into force throughout the European Union on July 1, and with the approach of vacations and the reduction of restrictive measures in several countries, there were many citizens who sought to obtain the certificate as “free transit” to return to a situation of greater normality.

Despite the initial challenge to the process, the European Union ended up giving the green light to the system and confirming its application in all countries, although work is still being done on the harmonization of processes. And there are new recommendations for the verification of certificates, which present a two-dimensional code (QR Code) that can be read with the help of an application in order to verify validity.

The Shared Services of the Ministry of Health (SPMS) confirmed to SAPO TEK that, on July 16, 3 million and eight hundred thousand EU COVID digital certificates had been issued, covering the three possible situations, and that these can be obtained through the SNS 24 portal, as well as the SNS 24 app on Android and iOS. There are users who received the document by email without even having asked for it, but SAPO TEK knows that some users have had difficulty completing the process, with indications of errors in the procedure.

In some cases to which we had access, only after several insistence was the certificate unlocked, with access to the user document already with the two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, but there are more serious situations, resulting from incomplete contact details, or households of older users.

One of the situations that was reported to us indicated that there was no valid contact for the generation of an access code to the certificate, in which case the same phone number was used by two users, in which only one of them managed to obtain the certificate.

SAPO TEK questioned the SPMS about this situation, and the indication given to us is that “people who do not have up-to-date contacts should go to their health unit (health center) and promote the updating of their contacts. After updating the contacts, the user is able to obtain the COVID EU digital certificate through the SNS 24” portal.

The resolution requires a face-to-face visit, in situations that often affect older users with less digital literacy.

SPMS also mentions that “since last week it is possible to consult the COVID UE digital certificate in the SNS 24 app, for that, just install the SNS 24 mobile application and authenticate yourself using the Mobile Digital Key”, a solution that is also not very practical for older users.

The SNS24 can be of help to clarify doubts, but updating contacts in Health Centers seems to be the only way for these users to obtain the digital certificate. And in this case, we are still talking about older users, but when vaccination is extended to younger users, the problem may be repeated, as many guardians have their contacts associated with informing younger children, and not only that.

When is the Digital Certificate valid?

Although it can be issued right after taking the vaccines, the Certificate is only valid 14 days after vaccination, after which the vaccine itself is considered valid.

How does it work or Green Certificate?

The document indicates the date of vaccination (or the different doses), tests performed or recovery from the COVID-19 disease, in order to cover all options for citizens. Note that the document is only valid for vaccines that have been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). So far only four vaccines are valid: BioNTech Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen. A team of students on the George Washington University Rocket Team working mostly from home because of COVID-19 debated whether they should compete in the virtual 2021 Spaceport America Cup?the largest collegiate rocket competition in the world?and only present the design and calculations for a rocket built with limited campus access.

But faculty adviser Murray Snyder, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and international affairs in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, insisted the team launch the rocket.

?I was pretty adamant. ?No. We will launch [it],?? he told the students. ?I don?t care if it crashes and burns.?

The GW Rocket team built the rocket and launched it with the help of mentors, Ben and Elaine Russell, in a field in Virginia just outside Washington, D.C. They won top prize in the Space Dynamics Lab Payload Competition and received an honorable mention in the 10,000 feet (altitude) Student Research and Development (SRAD) Solid Booster Competition.

The team was led by Ben Wormuth, B.S. ?21, an electrical engineering major, and broken down into four groups that allowed students to specialize in building, launching and recovering the rocket and creating a 10-pound payload system to go into space that tested laser communications between small satellites.

?It really was an impressive thing they did. This was done by undergraduate students,? said Dr. Snyder. ?This is really high-level engineering. It?s really hands on. From my perspective as adviser, it is infinitely better than taking any course that I teach or any exam or homework that I give them because that?s all theoretical.

?Theory is fine, but to get theory to work in practice is really hard.?

In fact, a test launch before the competition of a hybrid, two-stage rocket using a commercial motor experienced a catastrophic failure. It blew up, destroying most of the rocket frame. There were other snafus, allotting the space for parachutes to fit properly and devising a method to release the payload at peak altitude. After each snafu, students retraced their work in the Science and Engineering Hall machine shop. All of this was complicated by team members working in different parts of the country and having to ship their work from on-campus to Kansas and back to Washington, D.C.

Ariana Lesniak, B.S. ?21, led the recovery team, which was in charge of figuring out the size of the parachutes that were we needed to ensure that the rocket descended after launch at a rate slow enough that it didn?t crash and could be reused. She said not being able to physically get their hands on the rocket made her group?s work harder to complete.

?I spent a lot of time on Zoom calls with Ben and the rest of the teams going over recovery stuff,? Ms. Lesniak said. ?Ben would put his computer up in the shop so we could look down at the rocket, and I would explain piece by piece what goes where and how this thing comes together and the correct way to do things, and different pieces of hardware.?

The aerostructures group leader was Adam Brewer, B.S. ?21. The team was responsible for building the frame, helping to manage the parachutes and ensuring that the rocket came down safely. He was assisted by rising juniors Eliese Ottinger and Aidan Worthington.

Outgoing team leader Mr. Wormuth, who will be completing work on a master?s degree, was on campus with up and coming juniors Amy Chang and Mr. Price, keeping tabs on the teams, facilitating communication and making sure they had the supplies they needed while building (rebuilding) the rocket motor.

?[Failure] is a really valuable lesson to learn while you?re in school,? he said, ?how to deal with an experiment that doesn?t go the way you expected and not only that, pretty much destroys your entire project.?

For Mr. Jackson, who takes over as Rocket team leader his senior year, placing first was a measure of how well the team worked. ?It wasn?t just about knowledge being gained but how I could cooperate with others, look outside of myself and help the team get their job done at the end of the day while still contributing what I could to their efforts,? he said.

A team of students on the George Washington University Rocket Team working mostly from home because of COVID-19 debated whether they should compete in the virtual 2021 Spaceport America Cup?the largest collegiate rocket competition in the world?and only present the design and calculations for a rocket built with limited campus access.

But faculty adviser Murray Snyder, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and international affairs in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, insisted the team launch the rocket.

?I was pretty adamant. ?No. We will launch [it],?? he told the students. ?I don?t care if it crashes and burns.?

The GW Rocket team built the rocket and launched it with the help of mentors, Ben and Elaine Russell, in a field in Virginia just outside Washington, D.C. They won top prize in the Space Dynamics Lab Payload Competition and received an honorable mention in the 10,000 feet (altitude) Student Research and Development (SRAD) Solid Booster Competition.

The team was led by Ben Wormuth, B.S. ?21, an electrical engineering major, and broken down into four groups that allowed students to specialize in building, launching and recovering the rocket and creating a 10-pound payload system to go into space that tested laser communications between small satellites.

The ASU-led team that built NASA?s Lunar Polar Hydrogen Mapper, or ?LunaH-Map? for short, has safely delivered their spacecraft to NASA?s Kennedy Space Center in Florida in preparation for a launch expected later this year on NASA?s Space Launch System (SLS) Artemis I rocket.

LunaH-Map is a fully functional interplanetary spacecraft about the size of a large cereal box and weighing about 30 pounds. It is the first mission to be led, designed, assembled, integrated, tested and delivered from the ASU Tempe campus. Its destination is in orbit around the moon, from which it will map water-ice in permanently shadowed regions of the lunar south pole.

To start its journey from ASU to NASA?s Kennedy Space Center, first the spacecraft was placed in a doubly sealed, nitrogen-filled, electrostatic-safe bag. It was then carefully placed into a crushproof and dustproof foam-lined case.

Four tickets from Phoenix to Orlando were purchased on a commercial airline, three for the human members of the LunaH-Map team and one for the spacecraft, which was placed in the middle seat between two team members.

Once the LunaH-Map team arrived at Kennedy Space Center, they unpacked the spacecraft, checked to make sure it had not been jostled or collected any dust or debris during transport, and took photos for documentation. After installing a set of handles and carefully removing the ?Remove Before Flight? cover plates, they slid the spacecraft into the flight dispenser that will launch with the SLS rocket. Then, the door to the flight dispenser was carefully closed and latched.

?From there, we handed the operation over to NASA,? said LunaH-Map Principal Investigator and Assistant Professor Craig Hardgrove of ASU?s School of Earth and Space Exploration who, along with AZ Space Technologies Mechanical Lead Nathaniel Struebel and Qwaltec Operations Lead Patrick Hailey, transported the spacecraft to its destination in Florida.

When Artemis I launches later this year, including LunaH-Map, there will be around a dozen small spacecraft, called CubeSats, onboard. These will be the secondary payloads on the Artemis I mission.

The primary mission of Artemis I is testing NASA?s Space Launch System, which is designed to lift more than any existing launch vehicle. The rocket will also transport the Orion spacecraft, which will perform a lunar flyby and return to Earth and which, on future missions, will carry human crews to space. The ring that connects Orion to SLS has room for the CubeSat payloads, which will be sent into deep space during the mission.

Once Artemis I is launched and LunaH-Map is deployed, the spacecraft will use a series of lunar fly-bys and its ion propulsion system to enter the lunar orbit. Once it reaches low altitude, it will begin its scientific mission to measure the abundance of hydrogen within permanently shadowed regions of the lunar south pole, using a new type of compact neutron spectrometer.

While we know from decades of lunar exploration that there are water ice enrichments in certain regions around the poles of our moon, LunaH-Map will seek to determine how much and where these enrichments are. They may contain enough water to change our view of the formation and evolution of moon, or they may contain enough water to support future human and robotic exploration of the solar system.

The total mission will last about a year and the spacecraft will perform nearly 300 orbits of the moon. During this time, LunaH-Map will be operated from the mission operations center in Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building 4 on the ASU Tempe campus where the spacecraft was built. The team will communicate directly with NASA?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory Deep Space Network to send commands that will be transmitted to the spacecraft.

?Delivery of the spacecraft to NASA and the Artemis program represents an enormous achievement that is the culmination of years of dedicated work by the ASU LunaH-Map team and our many vendor and contractor partners nationwide,? said LunaH-Map Deputy Principal Investigator Jim Bell, who is a planetary scientist and professor at ASU?s School of Earth and Space Exploration. ?It?s a milestone achievement for ASU overall and will help pave the way for many similarly exciting future CubeSat missions for ASU students, faculty and staff.?

The ASU-led team that built NASA?s Lunar Polar Hydrogen Mapper, or ?LunaH-Map? for short, has safely delivered their spacecraft to NASA?s Kennedy Space Center in Florida in preparation for a launch expected later this year on NASA?s Space Launch System (SLS) Artemis I rocket.

LunaH-Map is a fully functional interplanetary spacecraft about the size of a large cereal box and weighing about 30 pounds. It is the first mission to be led, designed, assembled, integrated, tested and delivered from the ASU Tempe campus. Its destination is in orbit around the moon, from which it will map water-ice in permanently shadowed regions of the lunar south pole.

To start its journey from ASU to NASA?s Kennedy Space Center, first the spacecraft was placed in a doubly sealed, nitrogen-filled, electrostatic-safe bag. It was then carefully placed into a crushproof and dustproof foam-lined case.
